Without further ado the No Simple Road Crew gives you Jeff Mattson of Dark Star Orchestra!

How's it's going on Jeff, I'm Aaron how's it going today it's going good right on this is Mel Jeff thanks for joining us okay nice to meet you and then on the third one here I'm apple and thank you so much Japanese gotta say to you I think you were the first person ever to log on to zoom with us they had your audio and video work in instantly it usually takes several minutes of like we can't hear you or it's are in perfect mail that man it's a year of doing zoom we haven't learned anything from cove it it's how to zoom right now so where are you Jeff in in not I am on a home on Long Island okay your right on man and you guys are getting ready to go back out right get ready to start tour we have already been we well we've been Jordan we actually got quite a bit during in in spite of the the pandemic for what we were doing some kind of weekend things where where they would have at first it was just the outdoor things where people in cars right yeah really bizarre going into a parking lot and then they had people in pods and with so we would fly into a city and played two nights Friday and Saturday we usually and then the next we can go somewhere else so but there we just came back last week from our first like full blown %HESITATION normal tour traveling on the bus doing all that we have done some small runs right this is like two and a half weeks how to feel we were out how to fill my heart with it felt good to play I'm a little outage street from doing it was for us to be honest I don't know how you guys do it badly and then we you know we %HESITATION the the first half was in California was a second the last bit was in Colorado in and then you know every day we would be able to going to a higher and higher elevations Jews more more tired to get whistle is oxygen and yeah I I do not know how you guys do it I mean do you know these huge like seasonal tours that you do even last year we did like I don't know eight shows eat fish shows M. by the end of it shows like I'm ready to hibernate for the entire winter and you know what I mean like I physically it's it is really demanding to be out there and be on the road not sleeping in your own bed and and doing all that but I guess it's for the love of the thing huh yeah yeah yeah yeah it's you know we twenty hours a day traveling and so four hours a day playing kind of offense you know and you know I would be remiss if I didn't %HESITATION start off by just saying thanks for what you do Jeff %HESITATION yes if you're a real brother like dark star orchestra's is really special to this family we all live together Mel's my wife me and apple have been friends since we were kids and %HESITATION darkstar his always been very very special to this family and you guys have provided %HESITATION hours and hours of psychedelic fun for us man so just thank you brother for what you do and and won't lane at our welcome them as well also like it because it's like a dog on you're you're one of the bands that we love to enter to use people to that aren't very familiar with like the dad and stuff that are interested and they're like well I want to experience you know what it what it's like what it's like well let's go to these cats to recreate shows and they will take you in a time capsule you know and everybody we take it it's like seeing them like when we saw our first dead shows you know it's like that they come out and they get it they have so much fun it is just such a blast thanks Yemen thank you Jeff I've been really curious brother like I get the the drive to want to play Grateful Dead music I play guitar to like we were just aren't in songs today as a matter of fact but to actually dig N. N. like okay we're going to pick a date and we're gonna recreate a show in its entirety from start to finish that takes it to a whole other level of it's more than musicianship at that point it's it's something else and %HESITATION it I wonder if you could talk about that a little bit sure well what he teaches %HESITATION I'm in for fortunately it's it's cumulative in the sense that %HESITATION after you've done say a seventy six show well bunch of times you start to know what to expect %HESITATION what we're looking at %HESITATION what we're looking for is is playing the arrangements the way they did at the time you know trying to get them that feel are we trying to get the tones they have the right guitars three keyboards the rate drum set up so I mean it is more involved than just gonna go over there obviously and and and just plain AM a bunch of Grateful Dead songs and there are you know we're yes with this great great knowledge of the minutia of the different errors you know that that good but you know so what what's different about you know %HESITATION eighty nine grandma roles compared it was seventy two Rambler really like anything when you know you fortunately you don't have to learn it all from scratch every time you but we do well we do listen to the shows we don't lose the every second of it because it %HESITATION frequently along in the order we have a lot of things to do but dumb we will go through a unfortunately it's all it's all out there %HESITATION just about %HESITATION to to listen to all right and your finger tips so we listen to the shows and %HESITATION see what's special about it and see how they're the tempos relay came in with the transitions were about and %HESITATION will %HESITATION will retain that information trying to bring it to bear the the night of the show it it it's so %HESITATION it's other worldly to me because I saw my first show in eighty nine %HESITATION I was eighteen years old and %HESITATION you know as a a young head like I had older cats that kind of took me under their wing and and started giving me tapes and show me the ropes so to speak and and you know we all have our lake likes and dislikes when it comes to Grateful Dead stuff we all have our favorite era but to get up on stage N. invoke the energy of that particular show it it's it it it's peculiar man it's it's a trip because I know for me like we saw you guys last time we saw you was here in Portland at the Roseland theater and a it when that show ended there that energy of a Grateful Dead show has descended on that place and you guys none of you guys are the members of the Grateful Dead but that spirit shows up N. I wonder what how you guys see it from from from the stage like you know when the show's over do you feel like that too like you've invoke that saying wow I mean it depends on the night you know %HESITATION you know I there's been a lot of nights were %HESITATION you know we'll turn to one another after the show and say yeah I think we you know captured the spirit of of that era in an email well the next one not as much now but %HESITATION that's what we're that's where we're shooting for and so it's very satisfying if we feel like %HESITATION yeah that felt like %HESITATION you know whatever %HESITATION the seventy seven you said you know if they have that energy to it you know yes it's the coolest thing ever man and and like he said go ahead hi no no go ahead because I was gonna say another time we saw buffering and like to make we said you know the being able to bring somebody that never got to see Jerry or the Grateful Dead play to have them experience that it's it's some special man it's it's a it's there is the one person that I'm thinking of in particular that we brought to show and and this guy was afterwards he said you know I feel like I got to see them tonight but then I got to see what you guys were talking about because it would darkstar did N. T. you know taking the the playing to that level is a not common and I wonder with you man like sitting down to learn Grateful Dead songs is one thing but then to try and capture a style of of player and make it your own how do you even go about doing that well you know it helps it I mean I guess it kind of goes without saying that we're all we all came into this is hardcore dead as well %HESITATION so %HESITATION I was fortunate enough to see my first issue in nineteen seventy three %HESITATION rob Morocco's saw his in house to %HESITATION in in %HESITATION so one of the front line there we were a little older there we we saw our first shows in the seventies and the Grateful Dead drummer is a little younger than me so well in the eighties but where they all went back and listened to tapes and it was so there's already before you even sit down and work out during the with dark star is already is this idea of the different sounds of the different error is in and %HESITATION how is the individual styles changed like for me it would be Jerry Garcia's style how it's how it evolved over the years you know and what he brought to it over different different periods %HESITATION it's it's like %HESITATION an academic study almost I would say you know I mean that's kind of a dry way of putting it because it's so much fun and but there is you know it's a lot of %HESITATION it's a lot of information that %HESITATION you know there there are a lot of dead hands out there that you probably know this stuff they just now have or had a bleak way to apply it like we do yeah I never thought about it like that absolutely man like after listening to the songs for what thirty two years now it's part of who I am you know if I if I only could make my fingers work the way I want them to I could probably get it out you know what I mean but right right right exactly yeah right you're saying that in it's just baffling to me though that it really is like the the sound that you have and the style of playing it has the same feeling and every guitar Grateful Dead player has their own voice you know what I'm saying now you could tell when Clapton is playing or with Hendrix's playing when Jerry's playing you can just hear it but there is a feeling that comes along with Jerry's guitar that is very peculiar in particular that I never experienced anywhere else and to be able to like invoke that thing N. N. do you ever look at it like channeling Grateful Dead it's a real nice romantic image but you know that we I don't think that I would I would never like say like I'm channeling Jerry you know it's just you know that's all right I'm not that you know what I'm saying hi I feel like look what I am channeling it all those years of listening you know and all knowing when it what that makes me feel like you know so I don't you know common mistake that people have about dark circus is the thing to wear copying this stuff note for note because the but it's I mean it would be impossible to learn a show known for what we want to show no for no let alone doing a different one every night right would be an astronomical debt and so and in the family goals to what they're all about anyway so what's cool about what we get to do as far as being a cover band tribute band is we get to play we don't have to play the same notes every night we we we shouldn't play the same everything we don't even have to put in a similar incident I want to play singles Jerry play I can play what I'm feeling and when I hear my own little melodies to come to me and somehow make it you know this long is it like I guess there's a certain amount ending goes on that you know you know also we break into schooling any van Halen's solo or something like that right yeah yeah you know what I mean doing something that I thought that would happen for me anyway but but but %HESITATION so that %HESITATION you know it comes out sounding like what people do in a vise Grateful Dead music without without even playing something maybe that Jerry ever played put it something he might of planes I see I see what you're saying man yeah and it's it's just the Grateful Dead experience is so different than any other band and I mean that's why there's dead heads all over the place I know that like I said this a billion times but like I walked into that for show one person and left another it was mind blowing on a on a lot of different levels and completely changed who I am and altered the course of the rest of my life and you said your first show was in seventy three yes what what was your first show R. it was nine eight seventy three at the Nassau Coliseum they just put out a little while ago as a Dick's picks Dave's picks excuse me %HESITATION it was the you know %HESITATION the the night they played the first weather report suite and the name and they played the first %HESITATION let me see your blues away key thing nine it was just beautiful show and I completely got it then I guess even though I was into the dead before that I have I was listening to the records and even the live records a gold roses and and and your seventy two is up by then but then I heard those same songs Orland Europe seventy two and I was like oh but that's not the same as your it's the same but it's not the same it's the same song it's the same feeling but it's all different notes and I was like ha me and this is for me did you did you end up touring are not like some people do I am you know there were certain towards where I want to %HESITATION we do a lot of shows on the east coast like that kind of thing but not like you need to buy a new bus and take off you know I was looking up to see a lot of shows on the spring seventy seven two or two who knew that %HESITATION we see in the tree yeah wow that's like that's like the the super bowl of of Grateful Dead tourists there well I mean I guess it depends on your own yeah one of them said Jeff what was the %HESITATION or how did how did that happen that you all decided to start playing shows like that instead of just like songs well it's interesting I didn't decide that I. D. I wasn't on the original guitar player in in dark star %HESITATION would be John castle six and that was kind of his idea okay I was in the band still him to actually %HESITATION that's been around for over forty years called the design tricksters and what we what we did was we play Grateful Dead we didn't recreate shows we play grateful that we played original music and we would do other covers and to the men %HESITATION you know Jim you know find a way to turn them into a GM vehicles and so you know we put out of those several albums of original music %HESITATION we had actually I have discussions about like %HESITATION well if we really want to make it we we we we can do Grateful Dead shows you recreate service but we can kinda want to do that you know because we want to give up playing all a double edged sword well %HESITATION what within tricksters was that we were known for play how well we played Grateful Dead covers in a soul %HESITATION people with on this COS we would travel around the country people come see us but we wouldn't we wouldn't get much credibility is original act because the of those people would see us as a dead cover bands trying to be all things to all people in it and %HESITATION it was issue kind of a shame I mean we could well we did well but then it it dark star came up in so here's dark thirty come on in Chicago and %HESITATION you know tempering is with us in and they're doing really really well doing with that idea and it was a well are you going the idea works %HESITATION and then %HESITATION you know I found myself in the chair in the two thousand and nine when when John went to further he yes so you get that call and I mean this is like you know it not that you had already been doing it but now it's like now you move into dark starlet was hard for you to make the decision to to move over or was it was it a no brainer for you no it was actually I'll be honest with his little heart I was I was at that point I was also I was in the band that I had a hand with Donna Jean Godchaux and numb we were %HESITATION we were out there playing %HESITATION and we're really loving that and really enjoying it but struggling so it was kind of a well you know I've been going down this road for so long and then when I'm on the other hand you know I'm getting that handed this pretty good opportunity for a little bit six so maybe your email so it was yeah I was strictly about the night I went in on the first day when I was just filling in for John and I I it was a little strange and it will get used to win but once I did I was having a lot of fun and it was put in all that like I said before all that time of listening all those years listening to tapes in %HESITATION and all the we will fax them a cute then came the banner you know and I was able to use that information well I mean in the position that you're in all those little facts and bits of information %HESITATION like a super power you know I mean that's that's life like coming full circle and using your passion to make something beautiful and that's not I mean that's the best we can any of us can hope for it's like you know well shit and you do it very well before we were close in on the patio a little bit ago and Aaron came out and thought I was listening to Jerry and it was an tricksters will show on YouTube from like several years back the phone and he's like he's like whoa whoa is that him I was like yes we sat there watching you Davey just sounds so amazing I was gonna ask you to you because I saw on Instagram the your woolly mammoth guitar that you recently got that man that is now a beauty that that that thank you Jeff why the woolly mammoth I'm it's just an animal like you know %HESITATION blasting Willie minimums round the house and then when we kept the ball member acting on stage and %HESITATION I would stop short of saying it was my spirit animal because the cultural appropriation I don't know I guess I just seven anyway didn't mess get a pass it's cool man okay %HESITATION well you know this is the %HESITATION it just thought they were cool so %HESITATION yeah so %HESITATION do you know about the Grateful Dead guitar foundation no there's a gentleman in in %HESITATION in the bay area name in the login %HESITATION %HESITATION I guess made a lot of money in the attack back in the day and now he's a he's taking that money and he he uses it for three years Barton bought all these %HESITATION is like one of every kind of guitar the Jerry's ever had one that every did Bobby's ever had at least one okay hold and then he's got some real ones he he's the owner of the alligator guitar Jerry use like in Europe seven to live the Stratocaster with the little alligator on any owns one of Jerry's %HESITATION acoustic guitars in the it's just amazing so many couldn't be nicer man you and what is doing with this with these treasures that he has the start of this foundation where he puts puts these guitars in the hands of of jam band musicians out there who wouldn't necessarily have these guitarist so %HESITATION all %HESITATION so many of the stores on the scene have either a lease plays stores the game for Miami or have been gifted with these so I never had one of these %HESITATION %HESITATION reproductions of %HESITATION like juries %HESITATION Duggar when guitarist you know there that was just out of my Rome you know Hey and %HESITATION some of the foundation is paid for for this to be built for me although she hang in there they made it for me very specifically in knowing what I wanted how I wanted them to be and everything like that and it's to look at it it's %HESITATION I wish I had it here sure you to look at it it's like a very much a replica of like Jerry's rose bud guitar I accept still having the rules but on it it's got this woolly mammoth thing over here it's got this beautiful scene from the police the Sierra on the back all the lead and all the all the U. landing on the neck in on with Tuscan everything or actual made from actual mammoth tusk whoa okay that's taking it a step further how did you get lucky enough to dig do they pick randomly or how does that work with the foundation doing that with with what what the foundation like how does it work with today like pick cuties hold a lottery here no not on the you know they fans of the band and they said look we really want to make your disk you want what you want and %HESITATION well just it's it's just a wonderful thing I normally I normally stop doing don't do this but I've gotta ask I saw on on the on the guitar towards the back there's two there's an input and output on that thing right there's two places to plug in yeah what then is the it's called the all on balance onboard effects loop if you notice a lot of juries guitarist from seventy seven on have that you know it's a little technical but basically what happens is the signal comes out of the pick ups goes out through all your fax them back into the guitar them through your volume and tone controls I was in and out to the empty %HESITATION so that when you change the volume it doesn't affect the effects they stay the same sounding it is a buffering man there's a battery in their lives you make sure they get enough signal throwers wires and that's what that is it's all it's an effects loop in the guitar and I can so I can have an effect turned on and you don't hear it and then I reach down Hicks had a switch on the guitar and the effect comes in %HESITATION okay that makes a lot of sense yeah the it I always saw that on his guitars and was like the fuck and then I saw it on your on your mammoth Mike I'm asking finally well that is the man how he wants one and now I want one yeah no so okay all the shows we got all the shows you start playing guitar and you know you're doing this thing the finally get called up for third darkstar near you do in the gate again like out of all the stuff that you done what do you think like the most fun thing about playing this music is well for me you don't know them some of the most fun things I have is I've gotten that I've had the opportunity to play with so many easing musicians I mean I've played with everybody who's still around in the Grateful Dead to play with Donna Phil Bobby Mickey Gilley %HESITATION in this room it's a long list David Nelson you know Rick Danko people like that over the years so that's when I look back on the real treats then I haven't and it vanishes are that I mean we just played two nights at the Warfield in San Francisco in the first night we had Peter rowing come down in the unit %HESITATION sticks that we did about seven songs with your own and the next night but we are came down in about five or six songs on the so wow then in that theater men that the Warfield this hallowed ground man yeah you know right I saw a jury band there couple times in nineteen ninety one in that place it transforms into the most amazing cathedral on the planet you know it's a it's a yes indeed and search exactly and speaking hello ground man we're a we're gonna see you guys at skull and roses festival now yeah one have you guys there's only been one of my right %HESITATION no three this will be the third one is that right no I'm not sure how many but it hasn't been many did you guys play it's going roses already or is this your first I don't think so I don't think so so it's the the Ventura Raceway at that place man it's a it's something else the beaches right there Hey did you ever get to see shows on the west coast auto no I didn't know of its itself melts man I'm really excited to see you guys there is good it's great it's great E. it's like greedy dirty old race track that's been there forever Kendricks played there I mean the the people that played there it's amazing by eight point nine alpha Mantan Miami yes with the other one is the Brea we saw yeah that was %HESITATION are it went on %HESITATION northwards the last northwest string summit when you guys are in the Portland area for that that whole night outs like twenty minutes down the road from us and see you guys in there and that and that setting in that it was just amazing and we got a chance to play we had a chance to talk to Ralph and person he did an interview with us there came hung out with us and what what a great guy he %HESITATION he's still one of our one of our favorite interviews we done yeah he has sold like spunky and outgoing and with your program up Rocco yeah we have three robs the betas get that straight yes rob yes okay yeah yeah man we had %HESITATION stalking him out there that that venues amazing too and seeing you guys like with the with the forest all around and just it was it was magical man you guys I'm not mistaken we did eight eight twenty seven seventy two hundred million we did that we need to show us what the hell do you remember I didn't know which one it was by new is something special because it was on the bill when it got announced everybody was kind of freaking out that's one of my favorite shows though so I remember with ubiquitous question I've got a specially made especially requested %HESITATION the way that okay that makes sense I mean it is already happening all right up the road from the need to make sense so I gotta I gotta ask this question do you have a favorite era not laser specific I I'm kind of partial to sixteen nine through seventy seven words okay so like not the primal stuff when sixty nines pretty bright yeah okay I mean but they're coming out of it in sixty nine there is like the sixty eight stuff is raw but they're getting they're getting their shit together in sixty nine a little bit and my seventy seven they've got the machine running I just think that the the more happened in those years you know as far as %HESITATION with the sound of developing and evolving everything with what's happening in those years of yeah name to be well you know what's really fascinating what really like drew me in to the myth of the Grateful Dead was how they came together and like what the acid tests did for them it gave them this opportunity to like not have pressure but still be performing in a way that I mean they were yeah but if they didn't play it was cool it was all right and if you got too high and you couldn't tell that you're holding a guitar anymore it was okay but that that that like what was that I played some acid test not well obviously those moon background but %HESITATION the group of people in the northeast we used to do these %HESITATION several times a year really yeah the route this will bring up this museum and now we had run in the run of the place and would be just giant light show in the band would be set up like on stage man would be set up a local ice show so we're just projecting out to who was in the show you know we we just it's like you said we play or not yeah like the dead would do Hey and sometimes he got a little too weird and but that that didn't fireman is special because it hasn't happened you know that was its own thing and it bred this monster of a scene and hand energetically it it bonded those guys musically energetically it it it's it's sealed them together and so you know the day after Jerry passed away like the Grateful Dead scene continued N. you know kinda doing its thing but in twenty fifteen when fairly well happen I felt like it felt like something broke loose in twenty fifteen like something new started %HESITATION with that final fare thee well show that energy got dispersed and %HESITATION this jam community is is thriving now and there's so many other issues that are just killing it out there so many bands number so talented I wondered what your take is on like where the where the tree has grown because the Grateful Dead %HESITATION the routes that tree but that tree is bearing a lot of fruit now and there's a lot of branches and I'm just curious what your take is on that well it's fascinating to me because I I have been playing this music since the seventies he and eat forget about cover I mean we were playing jam music when jamming when the when like any bargain tarsal with dirty words like you know what forget about eighteen minute one so %HESITATION I'm even the the Grateful Dead they were playing them but they were just kind of like people looked at them away okay you guys do your thing you know but you have nothing to do with the stalled anymore you know right with on you know the sort of existing outside of society all while I'm so so I've I've lived through this whole thing I own through the the beginning of the jam band scene %HESITATION this entry again we work with the I'm sure you've heard of the wetlands in New York so yeah yeah yeah club we would like to ban the plate in the most you know that was our kind of our home home scene and so we saw the birth of the whole jam band scene we saw fishing Dave Matthews and widespread panic they will blame the wetlands you know blues traveler all those bands watch the world go by through the great beyond arms term we saw that scene and I when I don't think I would have believed that all these years after Jerry's passing the scene would be is strong and diverse as it is and it's just I think that the Grateful Dead music I think the lungevity it has been proven it has a lot to do with the strength of the songs for one thing these songs are your room times times specific given they they can exist they were two hundred years ago two yeah twenty years from now we'll still make sense the strong melodies and they have a compelling lyrics in there not %HESITATION who is the word I'm looking for just not so %HESITATION it's not hard to see a flash in the part of the day even on the the popular culture the catcher is not something they should always I'm sorry that they captured the human condition like no matter what you know I love it like you're saved any time and they change with us to it right is nothing so you get to you know they can be and they're and they're just open enough so you can breathe new life into them all different kinds of ways and it's still %HESITATION it is still that song was still that tradition having said that there's all these bands that aren't even playing recalled that but they're taking the openness and the experimentalism of the Grateful Dead and they've run with that and %HESITATION %HESITATION I I think there's always going to be a part of the population that doesn't let this cam free plan music they wanted they want to be challenged a little bit more you know that you have that sense of adventure they don't wanna one of the fun things about going to see that that was you you never knew if they were gonna take a break out some song in every room of her wrist or something like that yeah you know even if it was a bomb it was fun and they were taking a chance or like one of the things I used to say it was a decent movie New York Giants Stadium in the middle of space and I dislike when you twenty minutes of atonal music in Giants Stadium nobody can get away with that ship these graphs right there before people leave now if you're getting factory in lower Manhattan you know what's in this kind of stuff but I just thought that was awesome you know they were pushing pushing the limits of varying now challenging people that way too yeah and seeing where it's gone is is such a trip man and and also like we just a couple weeks ago we went and saw a goose and a I yes I'm seeing like eighteen nineteen year old dead it's now like a whole new generation is coming up that is turned on and ready to party and wants to be at the shows and knows the music and it it's really it did it really is true that like the music never stops and also the community never stops it's this like snake eating its tail thing for just going on and on and being old enough to have seen a cycle is a trip I can't even imagine having to be in your shoes and likes seeing it from the infancy all the way till now M. and how big the scene is yeah I mean we see it in our audiences minorities are largely %HESITATION a little bit skew a little older but we there's always young people they ever did no way could have %HESITATION forget about seeing the dead I mean they weren't evenly you know there's still like children ten years after they were definitely Jerry died they were really born you know I can't even wrap my head around that you know they're finding the music in there a lot when it when they're not %HESITATION you know not just rebelling Instagram others or whatever for and and there a lot of their parents turn them onto it some of them know but like those the ones that I'm keeping my eye on like I want to see what those kids are going to do musically because they have they have all the music from right now that they're taking influence of N. all the stuff that you and I grew up on that they're taking influence of so it's it's gonna burst some new thing that we don't even know what it is right now like it we have no clue it's something new and you know that's one of the things about them I don't know I was a very picky dead head I was wanted just picky yeah like I wouldn't listen to anything but the dead for a very long time anything that wasn't Grateful Dead anyone have anything to do with it it just didn't didn't do that thing for me and %HESITATION you know maybe five six years ago maybe after fairly well as when I started like listening listening to more security %HESITATION with different ears and I'm really grateful to the dead for creating the framework for all these bands to do their thing man and giving us the foundation for the scene that we're all part of because without them I doubt that there would be much like this you know yeah I just don't think so R. deceive common that's for sure yeah yes so as far as dark star goes Jeff flake I know the cove it put a damper on everybody's party plans %HESITATION but you know it seems like things are starting to chill out a little bit dark star jubilee is happening and I saw yeah so can you tell me a little bit about the jubilee because we've never been well it's in Ohio %HESITATION please call legend value used to be called the J. used to play there are %HESITATION wait Buckeye lake okay late okay that's that's where it is Buckeye lake and now it's collision valley but it's it's big big giant burnt beautiful permanent stage there and we just have our own vessel it's a relatively small fast William maybe like I don't know five thousand people or something like that a small and %HESITATION we play ever been night and %HESITATION we've had a lot of we have great bands come %HESITATION cheese I think of when you know we're having like railroad earth and %HESITATION and %HESITATION yonder well then BG hard move it move had %HESITATION right seven manner room when when you have that band with some it's telling the kids no the one voice that with the seven year is seven walkers seven walkers and they went and they were great eleven AM and %HESITATION anyway we've Billy strings there few years ago we we just all good bands hot tuna weighed about five years in a row a hold of them and and a great time with them sounds like we need to go to a dark star jubilee yes yeah it's a really good %HESITATION it's a really good to see you like it's just enough people where everybody it's like mellow you know everybody's hanging together not like you're fighting this mammoth crowd you know I mean it's a lot of people but it's not gonna get to know mall with put but this is definitely a vibe to it and keep both people really like about it all right I'm in that sold so for our two hundredth episode %HESITATION we had Donna Jean on and %HESITATION talking to her he was home I can't even explain I mean I don't need to explain to you me and him are both like get the little school girls leading up to it like nervous and they mean it's Donna and show what a sweetheart will it end you know when the we were getting close to the end of the of the conversation and I couldn't finish the interview with her I started crying because I I was like holy shit this thing that I've Blake loved and %HESITATION been a part of for thirty whatever years hi Mike I'm at the table with it now and I'm talking you know what I mean like I I lost my check I was like idiot just crying I'm wondering like for you man being in a band with her that's that's that's big energy that's that's intense shit N. just what what was that like for you like meeting her and and playing with her well we we really hit it off %HESITATION just on a personal level and you know to the point where you know she said in with the centric stirs and we kind of knew right away we're gonna end up doing something together and then %HESITATION we became my best friends and we written songs together and you know I'm still in touch with her all the time sounds kinda Marlys retired these days with she's just wonderful so much fun and %HESITATION so sweet and %HESITATION %HESITATION and much maligned to I mean she is she is so much more talented than people realize that breaks my heart you know they're always saying we always see horrible stuff about %HESITATION singling clean as a band or something like people don't know what they're talking about a man who had like to see anyone talking shit like that get up there with no monitor and when we talk to her she had such a good sense of humor because they can't we we didn't want to bring up it came up a little and she's like she got she prodded up and she's like a Hey the boy the boys in the you know all those boys and now the best voices either and I was very loud but she had a good sense of humor about it and was saying she is amazing are you now yes he knows what's going on as well and that our boys to we talked about because I saw there at that it could be a dark star jubilee boom box we talked about them a little and she it that that was funny because I was like are you into do you know your voice music and she's like add not my Cup of tea but you know I listen where do you where do you stand on that stuff Jeff with the with the EDM and stuff for you are you down with it %HESITATION it's not mine now your bag really my thing %HESITATION huh when I'm opening it I'm open to music in general %HESITATION I would listen to any so many hats on the recommended I would give it a listen right on because there's there's all kinds of %HESITATION %HESITATION branches off but the ticket we're seeing I think you know first it's a it's kind of a %HESITATION rolling now in a certain kind of party in right yes Sir yeah yeah we'll just we'll we'll leave it at that but yeah man again Jeff I'm really really fucking excited to see you guys play at Scone roses brother I am that I know I mentioned there's gonna be a beach involved so you know I mean that that the ends with the beat you know first the first somebody that like okay we were just having a conversation %HESITATION Hey you know those are four of them we were back to back we were just having a conversation before we started recording tonight out on the porch and we're discussing them having a hot tub here at the house it would be cool to have a heart to haven't come up was like we're talking all pitching apples like I'm an opt out because that's something that probably I would only use once and I was like wait D. you don't like sitting in hot tubs like %HESITATION knowing that I lived in a house in Vegas for years with one and I only set new ones so I have to like get a cold pool right after so this is this is this guy that doesn't like he is all excited about going to the beach in being in the sun in California the oceans cold unless there's an old talk about being at the beach but that's also see ation yeah we'll plus I'd love this because it's April in California it's not like the middle of July or anything it will be sunny have to hide from the sun because I'm so pasty but yeah I'm and I'm looking forward to be it it's just the environment and the smell the smell of the ocean and you hear the waves in the background like the beach is awesome I agree I just think that I didn't take you for a beach lover gap it was like it lives like school roses at the hot tub but be like you know I need a cold beverage all the time to pour out myself yeah anyway you just pour the ocean on yourself this week this I was gonna say this weekend at this festival yeah it's you know well yes I mean if I want to drive down to the Oregon coast I could do it this weekend %HESITATION I think we're busy this week are busy this weekend I well we're probably getting ready to go the show right now yeah in the future because yeah Thursday night yeah it's Thursday we're getting ready to leave to go to sea sponge opened for the special man I I'm really excited to see the special live Mike that's a lot of energy that those guys yeah there we go well because they were coming up to Eugene and they had a camp there to cancel a couple time wise and they were here they were here once and we missed him because there was a conflict or something yeah so like I said that's a lot of energy man any band that can cover primus's Frizzle fry in its entirety from beginning to end and do it J. island do it justice and then add your own awesome twist on to it as well yeah and and also to see sponge open for those guys yeah that's exciting it's you know like that's that's our hometown boys there yeah in an email the specials nine no small act like that's kind of big deal %HESITATION yeah yeah and I I believe he will even I didn't just chosen to see the special since we talked to him I'd just I'd I I'd love their music yeah and if you haven't listened to that episode with the special ed if you don't know who they are here's what I suggest I suggest going and listening to the episode first without listening to the band get to know those guys and then listen to the music that they're making because it's a lot of power there man yeah a lot of power and I'd like to say they go if you are primus fan or even if you're not go check out that of them are true beauty in the fragile friable inefficient as the army's yeah if you go to their Instagram they are going to be doing it again live oh really yeah wow very soon so I can't remember the dates or where but I it's just saw it today I can't really do it live so yeah and then tomorrow night we're going to see pigeons man Mary Lou that's always a boogie down we have some new friends that are going then I'm so excited to %HESITATION that's for heat Friday night to move shit that's right I'm very excited our the amazing that's like their first experience with the jam band the well I mean they've seen plenty of concerts got lots of lots of shows but I don't know that they've done anything like they haven't they haven't done a show with us with us no no we are all looking forward to it going to get turnt and pigeons man I mean pitches just makes me think a Jason and Audrey immediately yes yeah I cannot think about pigeons have been the case as a kid yeah the able family are they introduced us to pigeons playing ping pong and I will be eternally grateful for that I think I said I've said this before on the show but like what a glorious night it was to going to see pigeons was the turning point for myself musically opening up to the wider jam band scene like that was the catalyst for me really yeah for real for real like before that I was very grateful dead centric and would like my favorite was J. rad and was really into scene den company still and %HESITATION hadn't really given the newer stuff %HESITATION good solid try and Jason the the %HESITATION because Jason saying get off the fucking fence and comply with the and thank you Jason and then it started mileage he started a thing here and I love the Audrey and %HESITATION yeah that families very special to us yeah if you hear Intel man and you don't have anything going on Friday night I would highly suggest grabbing yourself a ticket yes coming to hang out with this the crystal ballroom come shake it off hello can you look up what time doors as well and then talk about pigeons to it we say Karina right minutes opening we do we recently had a episode with her and it's just amazing and the music that she is putting out with her band that is going to be so fun to get started Sir pigeon all my gosh my gosh she's going to Rochester child you talk like a high person yes she is hi embodied in that scenario hi it's a picture Kareena that's a good a word to be associated with it yeah she's definitely not boring there is a lot of energy there and we did we talk about that in the interview snowboarding there we were we were I feel like we've we've mentioned that okay yeah I have friends that somehow apple chief design it looks like eight o'clock okay so let's let's do this if you thirty tickets left it says oh cool there's thirty people out there that can still come shake a tail feather at pigeons playing ping pong with Karina right bid on Friday night doors are at eight is that what you said or the show starts today it this looks shows late show starts eight okay the words are price seven okay here's the deal no simple road family in Portland Oregon this is going out to all of you he he we are going to be on the corner right there in the front of the crystal ballroom at about seven forty from that corner about seven fifteen maybe seven twenty twenty five we're gonna be there on the corner if you want to come hang out with us and meet up with us before the show and we can all go in together and hang out as a family that's what we're going to be so if you want to meet up with us that's your invite and you just walk up and be like yo you guys invited me and him come on let's go with that I come home all right then so yeah that is your cordial invitation to come boogie cordially invited yeah you have been cordially invited by the nose of Perot family to meet us in front of the crystal ballroom at seven twenty and %HESITATION we can all go and hang out and have a good time together it'll be fun trust me I know what I'm talking about I like having fun I do it all the time this is gonna be a fun night I'm not very okay six thirty doors open all right so yeah that's a little early so yeah we'll be out there seven seven seven fifty ishe yeah so we'll be either trust roughly roughly maybe we might if you missiles that had just inside yeah real though we are doing like a meet up out front at seven fifteen so meet us out there and %HESITATION yeah that's that so well how's your week been a lot of holes cut for any I had so much going on but currently I'm not feeling my best my nose is a little stuffy I'm feeling fine like mentally it's just I think because of this crazy week that I had and then went right to my work week just circle bitter extra energy what kind of crazy week well the crazy week was I was in LA with our grandson our daughter and our sons in law and it was Odyssey such a great vacation and group good time needed like on the heels of that we've made this major change to the house and brought the studio downstairs and apple moved upstairs and then I had to leave like that next day so I haven't even been able to like enjoy the space that I created and got out of the move %HESITATION yeah your basement got hooked up yeah the basement is gorgeous I just went out there very before we started to record and %HESITATION we just like basking in how gorgeous it is in like so proud of it like it makes me really grateful to be in this house it makes me really happy to apple for a grateful to apple for lake doing that so that we can all have what we have now of it feels so good in this room and so anyway I I was in LA with my daughter and she treated me she rolled out the red carpet of but she took me to I got a facial she we had a little chic dinner party with wine and gift card your fancy I was fancy I was wearing a dress and everything I put my hair in an updo and I saw that it's a video you because every day I don't see it as she recorded that'll keep the that we had a fire they know how to how they know how to do it %HESITATION they got to the food with them and their crew down there %HESITATION my city be the best salad Adam was slaving over the %HESITATION but fried rice we had appetizers key always a veggie rolls like all this amazing stuff and %HESITATION then we watch the Kanye west of video David yeah HM and U. S. thing what was added Kim Kardashian and Kanye west debate all right while it was crazy and fun and and then what do we do we had we got her nails done and you've got to hang out with the baby and our grass is me at Jasper had a bathroom it dim light dance party to two thousand one fish two fish yeah we were get dialed he would ask for likes fish we were destined to finish that's what I put on a J. and he was boogie with me we were like match dancing I put my foot out he put his foot out I put my foot back he put his foot back and like we were all busy he's three he's got the moves he's raised in that family he's not a leader in the bathroom he's on the start of the party you did I was like dang okay we're gonna get ready to turn the light off of it sounds like okay we're having a party and he's like yeah so we had a dance party with fish and the Sydney busted open and busted us dancing and she was like well and then she came in and we started dancing and it was a little bit of silly I got to play Graham all I got to plea my dad got to see to Sydney and her beautiful new place in to paying a canyon of we went to the beach lake it it was everything I needed right on how I think I needed %HESITATION and then they came back to you being cute pick me up in it was amazing I had a lot of like little many experiences of had some weird spiritual thing go on there but of believe that for another story another time you're right your message to yeah you always are though you lose your you're talking to the code you're such errands like when she leaves it's it's like cool for like forty five minutes that's about it he came down lately okay I will play my guitar and do that and then like forty five minutes later he's like mills gold it happened in management I was like you have aha what happened you know what it's here's the thing well that's the thing right at home for all of cove it N. melon I got to spend a lot more time together yeah we really have and because of working from home and so not only is she my best friend but I am used to her being around yeah you know what I mean so when she's going to I'm not gonna fucking moping around the house no no you're not open but it sucks it is for all of that we all we all knew me you would like the four of us one night or happened and it's like we're so the dinner table were hardly talking you know where to see it we're like we're like something was wrong in the like the energy you bring the energy up for sure it reminds me of it during Star Wars when they turn the death star on any polls that switch and it's like that's what happened to our staff and just like the whole house powers down for a little while you're not a like for a lazy man good to know and it feels good and it's I mean I feel bad but like I'm not I'm like I'm not gonna do it again I just feel that it's too it's like wait lately with anybody when they're gone for a little better be appreciate you little warm when you come back it was a great thing comes out separation once you're all happy and cute I decided to see me and that's kind of my favorite part of leaving income is coming back yeah it was it was a good it was a really good week man I hate got to really like get to know the space down here you know I realized that since we moved into this house I haven't spent any time in this room nobody has really no barely you guys watch like what writers the one that spent the most time this rate come down to watch a few series we watch together and a movie once in awhile otherwise I was in this room in this huge room by myself most of the time yeah and it it it cut off an entire to the house for me yeah for sure and %HESITATION so why didn't my energy wasn't in here at all and %HESITATION yeah that's true you being gone like I spent a lot of time in your eyes I slept on the couch after work and like I forget he's down here I come home it's like the fucking better ready and then I remembered down here is an hour and hangs out yeah and just play my guitar whole bunch and I sent you that song and that was really beautiful that was a highlight because I'm having this great time and then you're like Hey you play the song and I literally was going from one activity to another thing to another thing it's think about when we were parents of a small child no I get it you know like there's always something going on like if to go PTF to eat you have to take a nap lake I saw it when he sent you the song to be tell you is him now he said you should listen to John all right %HESITATION yeah I know it I know it that's singing voice was different than I've heard coming out of here before it was like he was belting out more was more integrated I. twenty seconds animal I'm like this is because like just Aaron they came back in the red like is this she's like yeah that's me it Cody said the same thing when you send it to you didn't realize it was you at first yeah and then asked to if you wrote it was like did you write that sounds like it does those lyrics sound like something there and what right does that don't at all yeah its roots and he has a long hat damit I can't remember the name of the song I send this to your great lakes says the C. hang on a second but yet full disclosure I saw him Jarryd Delaney Delaney are on Instagram and I was like that song is dope and I wonder if I could do that and course you down here by myself and I was like look it up as a comic if it tried nobody was home and I was like well that doesn't sound half bad I'm gonna record it and see what it sounds like and then I recorded it what did you think it sounded like I mean it was rough the guitar was rough because I was just learning the song but it sounded good of the song is %HESITATION side ways by Travis meadows yeah I was way off I had I had never heard of Travis meadows before his albums are super cool and that song side ways men now rarely it is an entire song my life story but that one definitely is %HESITATION in a lot of ways so yeah did that and just I don't know just getting to know this place and it made the whole house feel different all N. a I just I'm really grateful it it's strange when when you live somewhere for a while D. E. forget that it was ever knew yes you know what I know yes and so there was a lot of magic when we first got here D. S. was very like charged oh my gosh I remember that and being down here I told you this the other day yeah it made made me feel like we just moved in here again that same feeling of like wow the technician shining oh my god we get to live here like that feeling yes I'm grateful for the space grateful so grateful and like it's just grateful for the arm the studio space to men like I didn't realize like apple you you brought it up about like how you want to get out of the room back when we were done like it was cramped %HESITATION it would have been absolutely did and closed off and like it just when we recorded it was it was it and I yeah I said that to Erin when you were gone I was like I hate to say it I mean a I don't mean it in a negative way but I was like we're leave when we're done to get out of that room it was claustrophobic Darwin had no play he was always Boston around in in the stop we went we had to move everything it was it was always just kind of cramped and didn't allow comfort and like open this like it does down here in yeah it just feels different and and it does feel different doing interviews feels different down here S. everything does so I'm getting and it didn't work the thing I love about it to liquor talker me switch in the rooms and stuff like that this is this is my bachelor then this is a huge room it's like thirty by twenty you know it's a it's a big room and I but I was becoming aware it's an all summer it's so awesome I was becoming like a hermit and complacent like I fucking love the streets I could secure home and lay on the couch told fall sleep the walk over to bed and it wasn't conducive to me being motivated how that is now it that way however is it was soo comfortable yeah too comfortable out who so there is such a big thing yeah well okay yeah come on to anything is in the cold since that's not is that for me no gluttony is like over do over eating or indulging us losses like laziness yeah man I get it I mean but I I feel like that's just different like it is different it's been bad everything feels different is a good job I just got a few more I got that there's two corners in here that I got to get all the trash and litter outlines yeah %HESITATION yeah I it goes with the room yeah four it's cool yep it's getting cleaned up please do %HESITATION I don't know man I am you being gone it it gives me it gives me a little space and time to come you know do my own thing here so but I'm not it's my own thing is the same thing is when you're here I realized to make it's no different it is just have company it is different in this way because no matter what everyone needs alone time everybody needs you do because you just relate to yourself differently when you're alone that's like point blank there's no other way like I I understand because I freaking love being with you I don't feel like I need to be like I wanted you to be there the whole time we were in the city really miss you kept mentioning she was like I wished I was here he would love it I don't have so much fun dad like she just and Adam really missed you and stuff and when we call you you know Jasper Billick where's grandpa you know Darlin you know like so your presence was missed and then going to sleep really sucks without you like that especially in a weird place and I'm I was fucking cold I have this room was freezing that I stayed in and I was a just dressed properly I was to get %HESITATION it's going to be sunny in you know the forget to paying a canyon is exactly like hanging out our front porch with the shade %HESITATION yeah those three anions are cold it's they were it was freezing and so it was %HESITATION you know all those little things you just realize like I don't never spend really like I'll be out of time by myself and it's good for me to do that to think like I said relate differently and giving the kids my full attention is I feel like my gift because I got home today and I get a little text while I was at work in the home today but I was at work today I should say I get a text from Adam and he sent me the sweetest tax and how my late was is missed and they feel inspired and motivated and they just he was being thank you B. for spending time and can't wait to hang out again that's you know that's my son in law as well as %HESITATION Instagram parents like that's the the one thing that we can give that's irreplaceable full attention okay Josh it it's in time yeah that's me kind of like one in the same almost but yeah you're a hundred percent right that's really it was great to go to the swap meet with my daughter and let's just run around the playground and give this little cheeks like pink and get the car and it just be those cute as could be those memories are precious and I usually don't post too much on Instagram but I do want stories when I'm gone just so that you know I can have a connection with you and just you know share Mike they happiness by joy yeah and it you know to like it things are about to get really busy for us yes %HESITATION you know we got skull and roses in a few weeks and then mo Jo fest we have Beltane we have northwest string summit you've got summer meltdown like all this stuff is coming up we have Dicks tickets were going to New York to see fish were Billy strangely strings ticket that edge field the it's fully fucking on and it was good to have a moment to just like Zen now and claim this space and be with myself before the in the circus comes to town you know what I mean because it's it's common I like it it's as you say it's it's fight wouldn't but one local smells not gonna you there's not much that you guys do separate rather than mail going to LA once in awhile and one of my favorite things is to him because we we all kind of walk a lot of the same shows like DD gotta watch that episode a servant he's like nope that's me and Mel show knows what he's got the ones he walked in I was like to do it so he's like she is like that that's for one now gets back that's all right so yeah I don't cheat on I know he does it it's you what he said it's like apple that email so don't talk about that away from you I literally never think about the television so I'll never hear at visiting people you're unless you like a movie night or so you know the other thing to have happy for for Satan Adam and that Casper that they moved up into two pet to paying a canyon like those those hill those hills international model more and magic there really is little you posted like the little few the spot to stop like up then there there's the old stuff that's been there for a number of these little side of the road the community there is so strong it is in full effect they have when we went to swap meet the we walk in and the lady that walked in it was an angel's heart like just telling the %HESITATION are you a member a community member we do all this in this for the kids the whole entire playgrounds built by volunteer hands a duty to materials it's only twenty Bucks I'm like she gave us the whole spiel we walk about two feet are you said nice to meet you %HESITATION so it's %HESITATION told me remove it like a media at least there was lightning in any community %HESITATION this is Jasper everything it was amazing actually I totally want to think I was going to come to the dinner party with a digital like it made me so proud that she got to she's living in this place it's so close knit and all of these people are at the super talented lake there's so many people that are there are artists and craftsmen exactly in this area and so like it's just kind of like a little bit more mature exactly what city needs she and Adam are you know they need to kind of settle down and and currents there Harris said so like do a whole different gig and and when I was up there they were talking about that and you will hear a future episode of win win coming up in April they are going to be releasing an album we're gonna add we're gonna have win win on the show yeah so stay tuned for that win win situation %HESITATION so I couldn't help it yeah it's been awesome man and I am I'm ready for the circus to come to town I'm ready to do our thing at star hunters for spring time is here what about you apple %HESITATION it will %HESITATION my my weekly my we well we talked about a lot of it there the %HESITATION the only other thing a minor that will my week included is that this weekend I house sat for my boss at decline premium cannabis and I watched her dog it's a English bulldog classic three E. three and a half it is a little ham hock their their youngest son calls that fat pizza truck which I now understand I always thought it was like a cute name okay it's Pappy to track
